orthogonal: international forum for non-objective art, 18 october - 18 november 2012, the red house centre for culture and debate, sofia

poster for the debut edition of orthogonal

due to a complex of historical and cultural factors, the absolute and pure visual forms reached by malewicz and mondrian in the early 1910s have almost no influence on bulgarian modern art. should we exclude the achievements of georges papazoff and nikolay diulgheroff, who left the country in their twenties, and also the apocryphal stylisations of peter dochev and georgi yanakiev, one may well argue that bulgarian modernism is deprived of its natural integrity without a consciously held non-objective period.

a prerequisite for the emergence of non-objective tendencies within the local art context can be found in the maturation of contemporary bulgarian civil society. on the other hand, this is a mutual process in which civil society is the principal beneficiary of the promotion of non-objective art forms. examples of such successful collaboration between society and non-objective aesthetics can be observed in countries like the netherlands, germany, france and switzerland, as well as in societies much closer to our political fate like poland, hungary, the czech republic and romania, where constructive and conceptual traditions date back to several decades ago.

conceived as an international forum in 2011, orthogonal will introduce the bulgarian cultural public to a number of leading contemporary artists and theoreticians, who work in the field of non-objective art. apart from an exhibition of a variety of artifacts the event will offer a programme of open lectures and screenings which deal with contemporary and historical issues of this yet little known here art movement. nonsofia's ambition is that this forum becomes a regular art festival which will expand in the future and remain permanently on the bulgarian cultural agenda.

orthogonal's debut edition took place between 18 october and 18 november 2012 at the red house centre for culture and debate, sofia. the forum's opening was followed by a screening of max bill: the master's vision. more screenings as well as a number of presentations were held during the following days. the show visited the burgas city art gallery from 29 january to 5 march 2013. further information could be inquired at info@orthogonal.bg

oil/canvas: 85 x 85 cm

While trying to outsmart our natural environment we generate a tremendous failure record and leave a heavy legacy of debt to the generations to come. Considering the past, both distant and recent, it is ridiculous to believe that nature can be conquered or tamed. Nevertheless, we don't give up. Short-term solutions are constantly being applied to quench our civilisation’s thirst to subdue and to possess. We keep forgetting that this is a predictable race, as nature is always a step ahead. Funny stuff.

the limit of modernity | oil/canvas: 128 x 92 cm

Just like many others, I happen to associate modernity with the western world of the past four centuries and more importantly with its inherent pursuit of rational progress by all means. Scientific advancement, however, has only accelerated our circular stay on this planet, disregarding the values of all non-western cultures and ignoring the finite nature of all earthly resources. There is no such thing as progress in the round world. Spirals and circles are simply incompatible, as they do not belong to the same metaphysical dimension. The deliberate progression which determines The Limit of Modernity takes less time to decipher. It is obvious that figures progressively change their shape, size and colour, e.g. the white triangle leads to a darker square which is followed by a smaller pentagon. Unlike the rest, the black circle is fully circumscribed by a polygon. The b/w lines which accordingly refer to every other body are not applicable now. Progression seems to exclude circles from its domain.

a study on the fellowship | 2004 - 2008

.

fellowship / an example of human nature | oil/canvas: 90 x 120 cm

this combination between the british and the american flag dates the coalition of the willing of the early 21st century. although the composition can be easily recognised as one bearing contemporary political connotation, it may also be viewed as the symbol of collaboration between two extremely different ideologies. this kind of unity seems impossible and rather provocative at first sight. people free of prejudice, however, know that fellowships of the above sort are agreed each day between those ready to compromise their only life for the sake of evanescence.
